Speaker | Punk Scholars Network— Pop, Power Politics (2025)
I presented research developed from my Masters thesis at the Pop Power & Politics Conference, held in relation to the Punk Scholar Network Indonesia Conference. The forum provided a critical space to discuss popular culture as a site of political meaning, making it especially relevant for examining everyday cultural objects and their broader social implications.
My paper explored Kretek (Indonesian clove cigarette) as a cultural and political symbol, looking at how taste, spice, and national identity intersect with narratives of gender, labor, and power. Sharing this work within a conference focused on resistance, subcultures, and cultural politics allowed the research to connect with wider discussions on how popular culture both reflects and shapes social ideologies.
Speaker | IFSR — International Forum on Spice Route (2025)
I had the opportunity to share research developed from the same thesis at the International Forum on Spice Route (IFSR) 2025, organized by Negeri Rempah in collaboration with BRIN RI (National Research and Innovation Agency of Indonesia). The paper explores Kretek as a cultural object, examining how clove, taste, and national identity are intertwined with narratives of gender, labor, and femininity.
Presenting this work in an international forum allowed me to reflect on how themes of spices, women, and national symbolism continue to shape cultural pride and commercial narratives in Indonesia. It was a meaningful experience to engage with researchers from diverse disciplines and to see a personal research journey open up broader conversations.
Speaker | VU Amsterdam — Cultural Archives Seminar (2024)
Speaking at the Cultural Archives Seminar allowed me to trace how Indonesian heritage travels through Dutch institutions. Through this work, I explored questions of restitution, repatriation, and the uneven power relations embedded in archival practices, using the seminar as a space for collective reflection and dialogue.
