Soundscape Project made with Ruben Stoffelen
Urban infrastructures become listening sites, where overlooked sounds surface once vision loosens its hold on perception
In this video we further explored the notion of field causality through soundscapes of the city.
We made several field recordings as well as video recordings of our urban context, often honing in on smaller sounds that get lost in the myriad sounds that dominate the sonic landscape, so as to underscore the sonic complexities of the urban experience. We chose to separate and juxtapose audio recordings from video recordings, so as to defamiliarize our experience of sound and visual as entangled in each other. Rather, we aim to destabilize the sonic associations or expectations we have when using sight as our primary form of experience.
Developing on the notion of the soundscape as social context, we investigated how the isolation of a soundscape invites us to listen closely to its textures and complexities.
25 Hour Radio Relay with Mia and Gyuryeon
Collaborating with Mia, an avid Chinese Pipa player and Gyuryeon, a techno DJ we will do a 20-minute hybrid performance blending cultural soundscapes and live instrumental play. I am bringing forth Dangdut, an Indonesian music genre celebrating traditional elements infused with electronic sounds.
The piece revolves around a layered act of reviewing ourselves as performers to question who controls whom, who speaks for whom, and how Asian identities are seen and interpreted in the West.
Renewing the archive with Sandy Cheung
I collaborated with my friend, who is affiliated with KABK, to create a visual story set in the Hague's Chinatown. Rather than reproducing the inviting, stylized image of a Chinese woman in suggestive clothing that we initially encountered through a Google search, we chose to subvert it. I stepped in front of the camera myself and visibly uninterested, even irritated—using my body and expression to challenge the expectations projected onto Asian femininity. Through this contrast, the project reflects on representation, stereotype, and the discomfort of being seen through preconceived visual narratives.
Storytelling Through Batik with the Indonesian Embassy in the Netherlands
I had the privilege of opening the Verleden–Heden (Past–Present): Art Schools in Indonesia exhibition through a fashion performance titled “The Anthology of Hope.”
Hosted at Sekolah Indonesia Den Haag and supported by the Indonesian Embassy in The Hague alongside the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, the exhibition highlighted the ongoing dialogue between tradition, contemporary practice, and future innovation in Indonesian art and design.
I had the opportunity to walk for designer Sandy Rismantojo, wearing Batik 3 Negara—a powerful textile that brings together batik influences from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. The piece spoke through its patterns and process, reflecting shared heritage, cross-cultural connections, and the spirit of creative optimism.
Community Engagement Video for M Bloc Space Jakarta
This Community Engagement Video was created as part of my role as a Media and Research Intern at M Bloc Space Jakarta during its early opening phase. M Bloc Space is a revitalized creative and cultural hub in Jakarta, transforming the historic Bloc M area into a vibrant center for music, arts, and community engagement.
Through this video, I contributed to storytelling, documentation, and audience engagement by capturing events, daily interactions, and the evolving energy of the space—highlighting the role of creative public spaces in shaping communities and supporting Indonesia’s growing creative industries.
